Types of Bathrooms

When building or remodeling your home, it is crucial to understand the various types of bathrooms that are available. In most cases, homes will have one or more of the different types of bathrooms which include:

  • Full bathroom
  • Three-quarter bathroom
  • Half-bathroom

Understanding each type of bathroom can help you determine the cost of your bathroom remodeling project and the value it will add to your home.

How are Bathroom Types Determined?

When calculating the size of a bathroom, each bathroom component is one-quarter out of four components. These four components include a sink, toilet, shower, and bathtub.

When the bathroom contains all four components, it makes up a full bathroom, whereas a three-quarter bathroom contains three components. A half-bath contains two of the components. Typically, the toilet is included in these combinations meaning a half bathroom will have a sink and a toilet.

When it comes to the shower and bathtub, they can either be combined or separate. IF they are combined, they will still count as two separate components, with the bathtub being served by a lower faucet and the shower being served by a showerhead.

What is a Full Bathroom?

A full bathroom includes a sink, toilet, shower, or a bathtub and shower combo. It can also contain a separate bathtub and shower. Typically, most homes have at least one full bathroom. This type of bathroom offers the benefits of versatility and value while combining many functions into a compact space.

What is a Three-Quarter Bathroom?

A three-quarter bathroom contains a sink, toilet, and either a bathtub or a shower. More recently, three-quarter bathrooms are being built and remodeled with showers rather than bathtubs.

What is a Half-Bathroom?

A half-bathroom contains a sink and a toilet, and minimal storage space. This type of bathroom is often referred to as a guest bathroom or a powder room. This type of bathroom provides guests with a private place to wash up without entering a bedroom with an attached full bathroom. It also allows the homeowners to keep their garments and medicines private in their full bathroom.

What is a Quarter Bathroom?

Quarter-bathroom typically includes a toilet or a standing shower. They are often referred to as utility showers or utility toilets and are often found in basements or lower levels of older houses. Often installed by the homeowner, these utility bathrooms would be used by the homeowner while working outdoors or by a handyman to save them a trip through the home.
